Every male player needs a wife, a woman who can be there for him after a tough dungeon expedition or calm him down when he feels like Fus-Ro-Dah’ing a city down. Whether it’s a battle-worn warrior you want to warm your bed or a stay-at-home cook wife, this list will help you determine which wife you need.

These wives have been ranked depending on what they offer to your character in terms of gameplay. If you’re looking to choose a wife depending on their appearance, no list can tell you which is best as it’s completely down to your preference.

10. Muiri

This particular Bretonian is an Alchemic apprentice, sporting some facial tattoos and an overall pleasant appearance. As an Alchemist, she’ll run her own Alchemy shop, allowing you to purchase and sell potions and/or ingredients you don’t need. She is only level 6 so if she gets into a fight, she won’t survive and she does die permanently if she goes down. You will have access to a bedroom in the Hag’s Cure upon marrying her.

Where to find her: The Hag’s Cure shop in Markarth

Marriage Requirements: Complete the Mourning Never Comes quest, available after completing one of the first three contracts given after joining the Dark Brotherhood.

9. Ria

A member of the companions, the newest member and the only Imperial in the ranks. She has no home to call her own, so you won’t inherit anything upon joining her in holy matrimony. Ria is a warrior type follower though, capable of fighting by your side and granting you bonuses if you sleep near her. Problems come in the form of possibly being widowed, as Ria seemingly longs for a glorious death and may seek it out, even if she isn’t following you.

Where to find her: Jorrvaskr in Whiterun.

Marriage Requirements: Complete the Companions questline.

8. Camilla Valerius

My personal bae, Camilla has plenty of men chasing her but if you meet the requirements, you’re the only potential spouse in her eyes. She’s arguably the most beautiful potential wife on this list, something Faendal agrees with as he’ll continue to visit her, even if she gets married to someone else. You will adopt a room in the Riverwood Trader as a nice little bonus for marrying her, you can choose to move in there.

Where to find her: Riverwood Trader shop in…Riverwood

Marriage Requirements: Complete the Golden Claw quest

7. Jenassa

Available as a follower for just 500 gold, Jenassa can hold her own in combat and provide an excellent wife-follower hybrid. Able to be proficient in combat up to level 40, Jenassa is an ideal candidate for those looking for a complete package early on.

Where to find her: The Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun

Marriage Requirements: Hire her at least once

6. Njada Stonearm

Another member of the companions, almost identical to Ria but with a wee bit more talents available to her. As well as effectiveness in combat, Njada shows skill in speech, pickpocketing and sneaking too. She does not own any property you can move into, nor does she open a shop to earn you a bit of gold but she can train you to block better.

Where to find her: Jorrvaskr in Whiterun

Marriage Requirements: Complete the Companions questline

5. Brelyna Maryon

Holding a small room in the College of Winterhold, Brelyna shares her small space with the player upon marrying her. Brelyna can serve as a follower as well as a wife, where she provides powerful offensive spells in combat, granted she doesn’t take many hits to be defeated herself. As she can follow the player up to level 30, she’s another good choice when first starting off.

Where to find her:You can find her in the Hall of Attainment in the College of Winterhold

Marriage Requirements: Complete the Brelyna’s Practice quest

4. Uthgerd the Unbroken

You should seek out Uthgerd as soon as possible, as she’ll wager 100 gold for a brawl. The fight itself is straight-forward and although she seems intimidating, it can be won easily. That’s a free 100 gold, then you’ll have the option to marry her or make her your follower (or both!). In combat, few followers can match her might. Providing high tankiness and damage, she excels when used as a tank for the player to DPS from ranged.

Uthgerd even has her own house, yet again it’s an easy way of getting started in Skyrim.

Where to find her: The Bannered Mare in Whiterun

Marriage Requirements: Take her wager and beat her in a brawl

3. Borgakh the Steel Heart

I know what you’re thinking, Orcs are arguably the least attractive race behind Argonians but hear me out. You get to move into Larak’s Longhouse, a huge Orc structure that serves you well. In the surrounding stronghold, plenty of merchants and skill-relevant resources are available to use. In general, you’d only marry her to take maximum advantage of such facilities.

Borgakh also serves as a formidable follower, wielding powerful weapons and heavy armor.

Where to find her: Mor Khazgur

Marriage Requirements: Take her on as your follower, she’ll mention marriage if you wear the Amulet of Mara

2. Mjoll the Lioness

Mjoll the Lioness can be a follower as well as a wife, showing high degrees of strength in battle with strong combat skills, all the way up to level 40. She is unkillable too.

A huge downside is her inability to shake off Aerin, who will follow her to whatever house you send her too. Well, this is an upside if you like having more people around the place.

Where to find her: The Bee and Barb inn at Riften, or in the surrounding area

Marriage Requirements: Get her to “like” you (agree with her the Thieves Guild are evil), be level 14 or higher and she’ll give you a quest. Complete said quest and she’ll be available for marriage.

1. Aela the Huntress

Not only the best wife, Aela the Huntress is among the best followers in the entirety of Skyrim. Capable of reaching up to level 50, you can obtain Aela as a follower early on in your adventures and she’ll follow you through the rest of them. Producing excessive skills in the likes of one-handed, sneak, light-armor, archery and speech make her a great all-rounder. There’s a reason Aela is the most popular wife among Skyrim players!
