How To Install Binding Of Isaac Rebirth Mods
The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth (plus Afterbirth add-ons) is very much my jam right. As with the other Boosters, this is bringing player-made mods into the base game. I've already put a fair few hours into Afterbirth+ myself and welcome these.
Overview
Missing HUD 2 is an OpenGL powered informational overlay for the Binding of Isaac: Rebirth + Afterbirth.
The developers of the Binding of Isaac (Edmund McMillen, Nicalis) decided that one of their design decisions for the game would be to hide raw player statistics from the player as to not to overwhelm them. This project gives the player the choice to see their raw statistics if they choose to.
It is a transparent mod that DOES NOT disable achievements nor alter your Isaac game files in any way. Note: It can be used in Afterbirth daily runs with no repercussions.
It can be enabled and disabled at any point, during any run, with no lasting consequences. One can run other mods side-by-side with Missing HUD 2 with no issues.
Unlike other statistic based mods, it uses your live character statistics during a run. This translates to Missing HUD 2 remaining 100% accurate even after picking up items like Experimental Treatment and Libra.
Using
Missing HUD 2 aims to be nearly transparent to the user (and to Isaac itself).
You simply run the main executable (which acts as the DLL injector) and the HUD will be drawn onto an active Isaac process.Note: The HUD only appears if you are in an active run. You must leave Missing HUD 2 open while you play the game.
If you wish to no longer see the HUD, just close the main executable and the HUD will disappear (the DLL will be unloaded).
The latest binary release can be found here:https://github.com/networkMe/missinghud2/releases/latest
Note: The latest version of Missing HUD 2 is designed to be used on the latest Steam version of the game.If you are crashing or seeing weird stat values that are clearly incorrect, you most likely are not running the latest version of the game and/or Missing HUD 2. Pirated copies of the game are not officially supported by Missing HUD 2.
Current features
- Works in fullscreen and windowed mode (as it's a direct OpenGL implementation)
- Shows how your raw statistics change as you pick up items and use pills, real-time
- Allows you to choose at what precision you see the raw statistics (default is 2 decimal place)
- Statistics HUD on the left of the Isaac viewport shows:
- Total tears fired in run (optional)
- Speed
- Range
- Tear firerate (Tear delay, lower is faster)
- Shot speed
- Shot height (optional)
- Damage
- Luck
- Deal with the Devil % chance
- Deal with the Angel % chance
Building
Missing HUD 2 has the below dependencies:
- Main executable (DLL injector)
- Qt5 (static version directory set manually in CMake)
- Injected DLL
It uses the CMake build system to compile. The easiest Windows MinGW environment to compile it on is the MSYS2 enviroment.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth just received another DLC upgrade that, surprise-surprise, makes a difficult game even harder.
Instead of slogging through the main game and hoping the RNG rewards you with great loot, many players opt to use Steam Workshop mods to make things easier. There’s a big drawback to using mods though — enabling a mod will turn-off achievements and unlocks in-game. All your progress won’t mean anything, basically, and new characters can’t be earned.
That’s a huge pain. Steam User Sorario Prosperity had the same problem, and figured out a way to circumvent the annoying limitations that are built into Steam. Yes, you can install life-saving mods that make Binding of Isaac much easier and still unlock stuff, you’ll just need to install mods manually. Let us explain.
How to Manually Install Mods
[UPDATE: Added a new, more reliable method for manually installing mods.]
Note: This guide is for Windows-based systems, and assumes you’re using the default installation path for The Binding of Isaac.
Manually installing mods for Steam can be a simple process. To start, you’ll need to extract resources from The Binding of Isaac. To do this, find the ResourseExtractor.exe in The Binding of Isaac installation folder. Find it here:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonThe Binding of Isaac Rebirthtools
Using the ResourceExtractor.exe will unpack files onto your HD, adding about 1 GB to the installation folder. Next, find the folder called “packed” — is is located here:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonThe Binding of Isaac Rebirthresources
Rename the “packed” folder to literally anything else. For example: packed+, packed2, packed (new)
Next, let’s learn how to locate mods, and how to install them manually. Let’s start simple — subscribe to the mod Items in Spawn — once it is downloaded, you’ll find the mod located in the folder here:
C:Users[YourUsername]DocumentsMy GamesBinding of Isaac Afterbirth+ Mods
The Items in Spawn folder is called items in spawn_834252318. All workshop mods have a code in the URL (Item in Spawn’s URL is http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=834252318) — use the URL to identify the mod folder.
- Now that we know where to find mod installation content, it’s time to manually install.
- Copy & paste mod folders (For items in spawn, copy and paste the folder called rooms) into the Resources folder in the Binding of Isaac registry. Find the Resources folder here:
- C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonThe Binding of Isaac Rebirthresources
For example, for the Items in Spawn mod, copy / paste the rooms folder into the Binding of Isaac Rebirthresources folder.

Here’s a shortlist of more mods that will make things much less frustrating in Afterbirth Plus.
